Chapter eighteen

When I awoke the next morning, Toby was sitting there staring at me. He had that "look," you know, the "Mom, I really got to go" look. I threw on my clothes, then Toby and I went outside to greet the day.

And, what a day it was! I walked Toby around the bend of the campground road over to a place where there weren't any campsites and let him do what he needed to do. Thank God for my lavender-scented, biodegradable, military-spec doggie bags. I made that last part up, the military-spec part, but you know what I mean. I like good quality plastic between me and what I'm picking up.

We walked back, and I clipped Toby to his long leash, the one tied to the picnic table. It allowed him to wander around our site but not get away and get into anything he should be getting into.

One of my big goals I set for myself when I started my full-time camping adventure was getting in shape. So far, I had been doing a pretty good job of that. Every day I tried to do something healthy like walking, running, or swimming. The ocean looked rough yesterday, so I nixed the swimming idea. Walking seemed unchallenging, so I decided a run was in order. I didn't want to eat before the run, and although I knew Toby was hungry, I didn't want him to eat either. We wouldn't be gone long. So, I opened the van's doors and got on a pair of socks and running shoes. I was already wearing shorts. It wasn't too hot, and I figured I could cool off when I got back and change tops. I did give Toby some water before we left, though.

"Come on, Tobes," I said after he'd lapped up the water. "Let's go for a jog." Toby knew the word "jog," and he started wagging his tail so hard it looked like a propeller on an aircraft.

We ran past Dottie and Penelope's RVs toward the entrance to the campground. It took a few minutes to get there. Well, more than a few minutes. The campground was pretty extensive. I saw a police vehicle parked in the parking area in front of the store and wondered if it was Deputy Spencer. Then I ran around the campground’s outer perimeter. Toby and I had walked most of this way last night. Not quite the whole thing. We'd cut off part of the last loop because it was late, and I’d felt like we needed to get back and go to sleep.

I didn't have much of an idea of how long the outer perimeter was. I was just going by how I felt. The day was glorious, though. There's nothing like a spring day in Florida to make you happy to be alive.

When I turned the final corner to head back to our site, I saw a police car parked in front of Dottie and Penelope's RVs. "Tobes, let's go to Dottie's and see what Deputy Spencer has to say.
